couch to 5k: injury fail

Two weeks ago, I started a running program called Couch to 5k. My friend Emily tweeted about it a while ago, and after looking it up, I decided to give it a try. After all, it's so appropriate, given that I sit on the couch during approximately 90% of my free time.

On my fourth day, I felt a twinge in my left knee. I decided, stupidly, to run anyway. That was seven days ago. Today, I am still limping around like an injured old lady.

My ultimate goal: to get better so I can finish Couch to 5k. The goal I'd be okay with reaching if nothing else: I'd love to be able to walk normally again.

Anybody else have any joint issues? How long before you weren't in ridiculous pain?

Sincerely,

Hobbles McGee

  1. I've never had any problems with my right knee...ever. I started doing P90X, saw some great results, kept going. One day, felt a twinge in said right knee, ignored it. Was running the bases in a softball game, hit 3rd base, and the knee popped. Went to the doctor: bone spur and sprain in the knee. Gave me meds, said if it's not better in 2 weeks, come back. Not better yet...now I'm probably going to end up at an expensive specialist because the infernal thing won't get better. It's really cramping my style...I'm down 35 lbs from where I was 6 months ago, and it's come to a screeching halt due to this injury. Blech...

  2. dude, it's Sarah Kresse.

Yeah, I did that. For ME pain never went away, it just changed locations. Like, first it was my left shin. Then my hips, Then my right shin. Then my right ankle at which point I realized I overpronate on that foot and my ankle rolls under when tired. It's super exciting.

  3. hey, it's melissa haney. don't ask me how i found this blog, because i honestly don't know. :) what i CAN tell you is that i was having pain in my left knee and my left hip, and i finally starting asking my trainer about it (after deciding that i was being a wuss and just working out anyway) and it turns out that i have some serious IT band issues. i guess the IT band stretches from hip to knee and is a pretty common thing to injure for beginning runners, and presents as joint pain. anyhow, you should google IT band stretches... there's one you can do with a foam roller that is pretty intense but SO helpful. i'm good as new! good luck!!!
